Texas A&M AgriLife Research at Corpus Christi is seeking a highly motivated scientist specializing in Digital Agriculture Systems development. The position is 100% Research and focuses on developing advanced digital tools to assist agriculture scientists and producers in the evaluation of experimental treatments and the prescription management of agriculture systems. The successful candidate will develop a strong basic and applied research program investigating the physiological and biophysical processes involved in the Genetic x Environment interactions within agricultural systems and its implication in genotype selection, cropping systems design, and prescription management of crops. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with remote sensing data collection/processing/mapping (UAVs, Airborne, Satellite), big-data analysis, AI (Artificial Intelligence)/machine learning techniques, and crop simulation models. Areas of research emphasis include high throughput phenotyping for the selection of elite genotypes with improved response to biotic and abiotic stresses and prescription management of agriculture fields. The incumbent will be expected to cooperate with a trans-disciplinary team of biologists, engineers, and computer scientists to develop cognitive analytical tools, prescription management procedures and yield forecasting. This position complements the strengths of the Corpus Christi Texas A&M AgriLife Research unit in Digital Agriculture and interfaces with the existing remote sensing, plant breeding and cropping systems programs within Texas A&M AgriLife Research Units, the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in crop physiology/biological engineering or a closely related discipline. Strong written and oral communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, is required. Strong emphasis will be placed on the grant writing experience of the candidate. The essential characteristics of a successful candidate for this position are the ability to serve as a leader with a vision to develop a world-leading Digital Agriculture program at Texas A&M AgriLife-Research and Extension Center at Corpus Christi and to effectively cooperate with other AgriLife scientists to accomplish project goals. Duties will include:
Serve as a project leader with a vision to develop a world-leading Digital Agriculture program at Texas A&M AgriLife-Research and Extension Center at Corpus Christi and effectively cooperate with scientists form other Texas A&M AgriLife units, departments, agriculture and technology companies.
Lead the development of a strong fundamental and applied program exploring the physiological and biophysical processes involved in the Genetic x Environment interactions within agricultural systems and their implication in genotype selection, cropping systems design, and prescription management of crops.
Develop a transdisciplinary and multilocation/multi-state team for collection and processing of remote sensing data (UAVs, Airborne, Satellite), management and analysis of remote sensing data using AI (Artificial Intelligence)/machine learning techniques, and integration of the geospatial data with crop simulation models.
Develop an effective grant writing program to externally fund research activities.
Establish a strong record of scholarly activity by publishing and presenting research findings in high-
quality peer-reviewed journals and in professional meetings.
Direct PhD and MS degree students and postdoctoral associates.
Other job related duties as required.
