Description of Work Unit

The NREL is a research and teaching unit at Colorado State University with a mission “to ensure the sustainability of the Earth’s ecosystems through the generation and application of new knowledge.” The department’s interdisciplinary, ecosystem research promotes collaborations among disciplines and across fields of expertise at CSU and throughout the world. As a soft-money research unit, this role is critical to ensure adequate funding to sustain its vital role in the research community both locally and across the globe.

Position Summary

The Post Doctoral Researcher (anticipated as a 3-year position dependent on funding availability and start date) will work with Dr. Vogeler and her team to develop a multi-resolution remote sensing data fusion approach to support the assessment of the tradeoffs and impacts of urbanization-driven land cover land use change (LCLUC) across three African Countries (Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa) and within focal cities within each country.

Required Job Qualifications

Minimum education:

  • PhD in remote sensing, geography, ecology, or related field

Minimum experience:

  • Experience processing a variety of remote sensing data sets;
  • Demonstrated experience with geospatial analyses, statistical prediction modeling, spatial validation procedures;
  • Experience with the integration of remote sensing products within applied research projects;
  • Published scientific papers in high-impact journals;
  • Demonstrated oral presentation skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience with coding and workflows in Google Earth Engine, R, and Python;
  • Remote sensing processing experience with moderate and very high resolution imagery for LCLU classifications and identification of change;
  • Experience with object-based-image analyses or alternative approaches;
  • Experience with urban mapping and assessments of drivers or impacts of urbanization;
  • Ability and desire to work on a diverse interdisciplinary team of scientists on high-profile/high-impact research.

Duty/Responsibility

Development of approaches for the integration of multi-resolution remote sensing imagery, reference/validation data sets, public population and social resources data etc. for the mapping of LCLUC at multiple spatial scales through time for the identification of urbanization hotspots, assessments of drivers and impacts of rapid urban expansion, fine resolution identification of urban LCLU and distribution of, and equitable access to, social and ecological resources. The candidate may also collaborate on additional lab research projects if time and funding allow, and have opportunities to contribute to proposal development.

Compile and submit peer reviewed publications in a timely manner; present at local, national, and international professional conferences; participate in the organization and implementation of onsite workshops within our focal African cities for local stakeholders in year 3 of the project.
