Position Summary

The Laboratory Instrumentation Specialist will support the operation and maintenance of Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry instrumentation including but not limited to: NMR, ICP-MS, HPLC, GC-MS, FT-IR, and UV-vis.

The specialist’s first priority will be the daily operation of the NMR facility, including maintenance, direct instrument operation, providing assistance to faculty/staff and qualified students in the use of the NMR.

The specialist will also provide training for the department’s instruments.

Description of Job Duties

Specifics duties include activities such as assuring NMR cryogenic liquid supply, performing preventative maintenance, minor repairs and modifications, assisting faculty and students in sample collection, assuring proper safety practices, developing training protocols, and ordering supplies for all instruments.

Support will include assuring proper maintenance of the instrumentation (cleaning, tuning, minor repairs, calibration), arranging for external service when needed, developing standard operating procedures, and other duties as assigned.

In addition, duties will include teaching up to a 50% load as assigned by the Department Chair and Dean.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Experience in working with a wide range of analytical instrumentation and strong electronic troubleshooting skills.

Knowledge of component and board level electronics, as well as good communication and interpersonal skills.

Required Education

Master’s Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or a related field.

Required Work Experience

Extensive experience with desktop computer systems and instrument data system.

Experience in the use and maintenance of Chemistry laboratory equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field.

Experience with other forms of spectroscopy, chromatography, and related instrumentation.
