Business/Accounting Faculty & SBDC Advisor


PURPOSE OF POSITION

To teach Business Administration and Accounting courses and work collaboratively with
business/accounting faculty on all programs, including degrees, associated certificates, part-time faculty, and advisory committee
activities. Additionally, provide confidential one-on-one business advising to business owners and potential owners, as well as collaborate
with the Small Business Development Center to develop opportunities for college students for experiential learning in the SBDC.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Instruction (60% of Time)
    1. 1.1 Teach courses in the accounting and business
      programs with emphasis on a full range of accounting courses, such as managerial, financial, and cost accounting, as well as finance. Teach
      course information to students in groups and individually using instructional methodology appropriate to the audience and to the subject
      (e.g. lecture, demonstration, group discussion, technology-enhanced delivery, computer-assisted delivery, and distance delivery). Must be
      able to explain and deliver materials in a variety of ways to meet the needs of a broad range of learning abilities.
    2. 1.2 Curriculum
      development and modification by working with the Instructional Dean and other department faculty members in developing or modifying course
      content, course objectives, standards and instructional methods, degree and certificate programs.
  2. SBDC Collaboration
    and Advising (20% of Time)

    1. 2.1 Provide confidential one-on-one business advising to business owners and potential owners as
      stipulated in the agreements with the Oregon SBDC Network, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and Business Oregon.
    2. 2.2
      Collaborate with the SBDC Director in developing programs and training for undergraduate students interested in entrepreneurship.
    3. 2.3 Recruit and support student internships in the SBDC area.
  3. Other Institutional Duties (20% of Time)
    1. 3.1
      Demonstrate continued professional growth by staying current in and expanding knowledge of subject area(s) and teaching techniques through a
      plan of professional development. Attend conferences and professional meetings.
    2. 3.2 Participate in committees and other
      institutional duties as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
    3. 3.3 All faculty are expected to participate in
      and provide information necessary for the recruitment and retention of students into their programs, the marketing of courses, programs, and
      the college. This may include travel and working with students and faculty in high schools, colleges and other institutions, and public and
      private agencies.
    4. 3.4 Support College leadership in developing departmental goals and objectives as part of the institution’s
      continuous improvement cycle; includes participating in the college wide accreditation process by preforming departmental planning,
      assessment, and improvement to meet core theme objectives and contribute to mission fulfillment.
    5. 3.5 Attend student convocation
      ceremony at the end of each academic year.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s Degree
in Business or Accounting, or closely related field.

A minimum of two years teaching experience.

the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:

  1. Mastery of the subject area at a sufficient level
    to instruct and coach students in the knowledge, skills and attitudes requisite for success in the courses and programs at Southwestern.
    Ability to evaluate student programs both empirically and holistically and to prescribe and develop curriculum materials for individuals and
    classes.
  2. Knowledge of or ability to learn teaching methods to instruct students of a variety of ages, backgrounds and learning
    abilities. Ability to adapt to various audiences, to find various explanations and to facilitate various learning styles.
  3. Ability
    to work with and cooperate with college faculty and staff at all levels, as a team member with the Vice President of Instruction,
    Instructional Dean, other faculty, staff, and related industry/businesses in developing course content, objectives, standards, program
    curriculum, grading and instructional methods.
  4. The ability to communicate effectively in writing using the English language with or
    without the use of auxiliary aids of services.
  5. A level of computer literacy sufficient to use software such as word processing,
    spreadsheets, and databases to produce correspondence, document, and reports as required by the position and the ability to access student
    information for the purpose of advising and keeping student records.
  6. Willingness to travel and/or teach/coach at various hours as
    required.
  7. Knowledge of all aspects of business startup, management, and growth.
  8. Knowledge of resources available to
    businesses, agencies supporting businesses and training opportunities available to small business owners.
  9. Ability to plan,
    organize, and carry out activities independently. Possess strong time management skills to support efficient work production and meet
    deadlines.
  10. Ability to perform data entry and access various files in college-wide information system, word processing, and
    spreadsheet applications. Exhibit a high level of computer literacy, sufficient to use software such as word processing, spreadsheets, and
    databases to produce correspondence, documents, brochures, flyers, and reports. Accuracy in database management essential. A comfort level
    with advising using video and online technology a plus.

Applicants for this position possessing one or more of the following knowledge,
skills and abilities with receive preferred consideration through the selection process.

  • Teaching experience at the
    college level or the equivalent. 
  • Demonstrated learning and success in adult instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to
    work independently and professionally in areas of instruction, course and curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with
    students with a wide range of ages, backgrounds and academic preparedness.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring
    students.
  • Business ownership experience or appropriate subject matter expertise.

WORKING
CONDITIONS

Primarily in a student services environment with a high level of student contact. The work environment at times
may be emotional and stressful when resolving interpersonal conflict and providing support. Work is performed in various settings, both on
campus and off campus. This position requires flexible work hours including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Travel with student
leaders is required. The work environment is usually well-protected, free (minimal – 0-20%) from hazards or obstacles. There is little
or minimal element of personal risk. Job conditions are usually comfortable, with only minimal (0-20%) issues of confinement, temperature
change, incidents of noise, or interactions of a disagreeable nature, etc.

Positions rated at this level require minimal (0-20%)
physical effort such as light lifting, carrying, or movement, etc. Physical capability to use office equipment, which involves some agility
and hand/eye coordination, is necessary. The employee may be required to lift up to 35 pounds, unassisted, stand for periods of time during
the work shift, stoop, crouch or bend, or perform similar movements. Sufficient manual dexterity to to operate an office computer,
typewriter, and calculator is necessary. All individuals are required to perform these movements without a significant risk of injury, with
or without accommodation, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Positions at this level are not responsible for any supervisory
functions or responsibilities but may occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

This position works under the general direction of the Vice President of
Instruction through the Dean of Instruction.
