Position Highlights

The USA National Phenology Network (USA-NPN) is a national-scale monitoring and research initiative focused on collecting, organizing and delivering research-grade phenological data, information, and forecasts to advance global change biology and biodiversity research; to inform natural resource management and decision-making; and to promote understanding of phenology and the biosphere by a wide range of audiences. The USA-NPN facilitates the collection of regular, repeated, accurate, and nationally-distributed observations of multiple plant and animal life cycle stages through Nature’s Notebook, a phenology observing program used by thousands of citizen and professional scientists; this data resource currently exceeds 21M records and is growing by nearly 4M records/year. The USA-NPN also offers a wide range of derived phenology data products, tools, and maps to support scientific research, decision-making, and communication for various stakeholders.

This position sets and maintains the vision, mission, and strategic directions for the organization; establishes and maintains funding for the organization; supervises National Coordinating Office staff members (~10 individuals); manages ~$1M annual operating budget; represents the organization at national meetings and in regional and national news media; and undertakes scientific research and publishing in support of the organization’s mission.

This career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads and coordinates sustainable funding to support the organization, including leading multiple large grant proposals per year and managing cooperative agreements between funding agencies and the University of Arizona.
  • Cultivates partnerships with federal and state agencies, conservation and management organizations, professional organizations, and other like-minded organizations as well as UA departments to both secure funding and to ensure USA-NPN tools and products meet end-user needs
  • Maintains organizational vision, mission, strategic directions, and activities; leads periodic project and program evaluation to ensure efforts are achieving organizational aims
  • Coordinates among team members to select, prioritize, and manage projects and maintain strong and clear communication
  • Undertakes scientific analyses and authors peer-reviewed manuscripts

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated grant-writing skills, demonstrated leadership and management skills, Ability to multitask, ability to take initiative
  • Analytical and data visualization skills, including working knowledge of ArcGIS, R, and Tableau
  • Solid computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite
  • Collaborating and communicating skills

Minimum Qualifications

  •  PhD in ecology or related field
  • 5+ years work experience as a program director or similar position

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience supervising direct reports
  • Experienced publication record in ecology or related field
