The James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona is seeking to hire a Research Scholar to work for the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy (IPLP) program. The Research Scholar will support the mandate of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples (“Special Rapporteur”) in the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program International Human Rights Advocacy Workshop and Tribal Justice.
This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Conducting research and analyses of domestic legislation and policies impacting the rights of indigenous peoples with a special focus on criminalization of indigenous human rights defenders and protectors;
- Designing and conducting research for amicus curiae briefs and expert opinions submitted to national and international courts and tribunals in support of indigenous peoples human rights with a special focus on criminalization of indigenous human rights defenders and protectors;
- Ensuring legal and research consistency of all documents produced by the the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program International Human Rights Advocacy Workshop and Tribal Justice Clinic in support of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur;
- Planning and analyzing responses to communications and urgent appeals received by the Special Rapporteur from States, indigenous communities and organizations, non-governmental organizations and business and civil society institutions;
- Organizing and planning research to provide legal advice and assistance to the Special Rapporteur in preparation of official United Nations reports and studies, testimony, presentations and speaking engagements;
- Acquiring research funding by initiating and writing grant proposals and private and country donor solicitations to support the mandate of the Special Rapporteur;
- Assuring compliance with all United Nations regulations and guidelines on communications, reports and studies promulgated by the Special Rapporteur;
- Serving as lead researcher on research projects investigating criminalization of indigenous human rights defenders and protectors;
- Directing research activities of special projects initiated by the Special Rapporteur in the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program International Human Rights Advocacy Workshop and Tribal Justice Clinic
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required
J.D. from an accredited law school and knowledge of Federal Indian law and Tribal law
