Job Summary

GateWay Community College is seeking a Part Time Electronics & Robotics Instructional Specialist for its Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM)-oriented Makerspace (“Phoenix Forge”) that will be opening in downtown Phoenix in Fall 2020. This 22,500-square-foot facility will be open to the public as well as college students, faculty, and staff of the Maricopa County Community College District.

Under general supervision by the Program Manager, the Part Time Electronics & Robotics Instructional Specialist is responsible for a variety of instructional support and technical support tasks related to the Electronics/Robotics area of the makerspace. College students, faculty, and staff, as well as the public, will need beginner to advanced level instruction in areas such as basic electronics, basic robotics, Arduino coding, microcontrollers, soldering, breadboarding, circuit/PCB design (and how to use online circuit simulators), Raspberry PI, Python coding, wearable soft circuits, sensors, etc. The makerspace does not teach semester-length courses in any of these subjects, but does teach short classes/workshops in basic principles, projects, and how to use equipment, components, and related tools. This position also supports public members with personal projects as well as helping students or faculty who are working on projects for their classes. Much of the makerspace activity is focused on fabrication (making) of various kinds that cross over into electronics, robotics, and programmable elements, so this position needs to be flexible, patient, and creative to support a wide variety of requests for assistance. The Specialist for this area will help to maintain equipment, tools, supplies, and inventory. The Specialist will also develop video demonstrations, workshops, and instructional kits for online delivery (free YouTube content and our Learning Management System for paid short classes). As time allows, the Specialist will also help to develop our member community with a focus in this area of the makerspace.

Outside of their scheduled work hours, this position will have free access to makerspace equipment and tools (after appropriate safety training), and access to makerspace equipment training classes.

Essential Functions

55% — Beginner to advanced level instruction (workshops and short classes) in areas such as basic electronics, basic robotics, Arduino coding, microcontrollers, soldering, breadboarding, circuit/PCB design (and how to use online circuit simulators), Raspberry PI, Python coding, wearable soft circuits, sensors, etc. Instruction typically delivered through in-person classes at the makerspace but will also teach online (asynchronous).

20% — As-needed technical and instructional support for students, faculty, and public members working on class or personal projects in the makerspace.

10% — Curriculum and content development, including in-person instruction and video of demonstrations, workshops, and instructional kits for online delivery using YouTube or our Learning Management System.

5% — Maintenance of equipment, tools, supplies, and inventory for this part of the makerspace.

5% — Development of member community: help attract new users for this part of the makerspace, create group events and social ties among members, support peer learning.

5% — Additional assigned duties will vary depending on skills and aptitude of employee

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering, or related field and 2 years of related work experience

OR

Associates degree in Electronics, Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering, or related field and 4 years of related work experience

Desired Qualifications

Teaching experience

Makerspace experience is a plus but not required

Experience with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by the cover letter and resume

Customer service orientation with the ability to maintain positive interactions with members and staff

Special Working Conditions

Work schedule will be 19.5 hours per week, Monday-Saturday, between 2pm-10pm; schedule may vary.

May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen

May be required to lift or carry up to #25 lbs.

MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas.

Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate’s own expense.

May be required to work in an area of light to heavy noise levels daily
