energy system by building on the exploitation of two key low carbon technologies: hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The project
focuses on pressure swing adsorption (PSA) processes to separate CO2 from the syngas produced by the gasifier and builds on current
activities within the research groups. The specific aim is to undertake a systematic investigation on adsorbents of unary and binary
adsorption equilibrium and kinetics for CO2/H2 over wide ranges of pressure and temperature and optimize the design of cycles that provide
high purity and high recovery of the preferential adsorbate (CO2).
This project is well-suited for researchers with training on
both experimental and modelling aspects of gas adsorption. Your role in the project will be on: (i) dynamic testing of various adsorbents
involving CO2/H2 mixtures of different compositions and (ii) developing a detailed mathematical model to enable rapid and robust screening
of various configurations of the PSA process.
You will have a first degree (or equivalent) and PhD (or equivalent) in Chemical
Engineering, or a related discipline. You will have proven track record in conducting high-level research as evidenced by innovative
first-author publications. Knowledge of chemical engineering separation processes – particularly adsorption – and experience in
adsorbent materials characterisation and dynamic testing are essential. Experience in process modelling and optimisation is a plus.
- Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range
£35,477 – £38,566 per annum.
The post is available from January 2021 and the appointment is for 18 months. The
post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus).
