The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) division seeks non-tenure track adjunct faculty to teach the Bioremediation & Biofuels for Environmental Restoration course listed below within the Environmental Sciences & Policy program. The instructor will teach from a classroom studio location at either the Washington, DC campus or the Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD, and the students will attend the course remotely via Zoom. Of particular interest are candidates who have experience teaching and engaging students from diverse backgrounds.
Bioremediation & Biofuels for Environmental Restoration – This course presents details of environmental technologies for assessment, remediation, and restoration of contaminated sites. The course includes a brief review of environmental policy related to impacts of hazardous chemicals and endocrine blockers, but focuses on remediation technologies available for reclaiming contaminated resources and reducing health risks. It covers the application of multiple physical, chemical, and biological technologies, but emphasizes use of biological systems for the cleanup of hazardous chemicals. Students are introduced to the nature of hazardous waste, behavior of chemicals in the subsurface, biochemistry of microbial degradation and technology applications. Students also explore the use of biotechnology to maintain biodiversity, to remediate contaminated soils, and to isolate and remove substances. In keeping with the emerging “bio” technology exploration, students take a look at biofuels and their role in combating climate change on a global-scale and their role in restoration of degraded land on a local-scale. Students in this class learn to select appropriate technologies, design a monitoring program for assessing the applicability of bioremediation techniques, develop biological conceptual models for natural attenuation, and understand the key principles for design.
This course covers topics such as:
- Environmental policy associated with contaminated sites
- Assessment of contaminated sites
- Remediation technologies
- Biological systems for remediation and cleanup
- Grey biotechnology
- Biofuel use in restoration
A successful candidate would ideally be able to begin teaching on January 25, 2021.
- An advanced degree in a relevant field, such as environmental science, environmental engineering, biotechnology, environmental policy, or sustainability with a master’s degree at minimum
- Relevant experience in bioremediation, grey biotechnology, biofuels, environmental restoration, and/or related environmental fields
- One year of college-level online teaching experience.
- A Ph.D. in a relevant field, such as environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental policy, or sustainability
- The background to teach a wide variety of courses in the environmental science and policy fields.
